The record was made from two live sets from the previous year when she played Cathedral Of St. John Divine in New York City on October 12 and 13. Gals was dedicated to raising awareness for AIDS, both through her music and through activism. Plague Mass was released by Mute records and featured cover art shot by Tom Caravaglia.
