It was designed to keep ammunition off a soldier's hips
Two Royal Australian Air Force (Raaf) Wings Newly Listed circa 1941-43 periodPilot Wings (red, white and royal blue embroidery, on a black wool base, padded, brown burlap mesh backer, 42 mm x 120 mm); and Wireless Air Gunner (WAG) Wing (red, white and royal blue embroidery, on a black wool base, brown burlap mesh backer, 50 mm x 100 mm). Tip of the backer on pilot wing at both ends is missing but does not interefere with the integrity of the wing, glue residue on the reverse of both from previous board mounting, extremely fine.
